JCMS has several functions designed for convenient use when using handheld devices. JCMS has a number of forms specifically designed to be used with handheld devices, by using a stylus and barcode reader for input.  The handheld forms can actually be used from any computer, but they were designed with handheld devices in mind.

There is no “synching” after the fact. All transactions are immediate.  The handhelds connect directly to the database.

The handhelds need a wireless connection while in use with JCMS.  Any handheld that can run a Citrix session with wireless connections should work; however, we’ve only tested the Motorola MC55 and PSION Teklogix handhelds.  In order to use handhelds with JCMS, you need to use a Citrix server type solution.

To take advantage of the handheld devices, you need to have wireless access from wherever you will use the handheld. Setting up a wireless hub is typically as simple as plugging the hub into an Ethernet port.  Coverage across the mouse room can be spotty because of the metal racks; so strategic placement of hubs may be important.

You can get sophisticated and setup servers that manage encryption security, etc.  Some users may need some support from their IT department to get setup.

The JCMS handheld functions are designed to work with barcode scanners. JCMS can print barcodes on cage cards. Using handheld devices with built in barcode readers you can quickly:

  • Wean mice
  • Remove mice from colony
  • Update mouse life status
  • Set up matings
  • Record litters
  • Print cage cards
  • Move mice
